Who do I contact about animals (stray cats, wild animals, etc.)?

Depending on the situation and the type of animal you see, you have several options:

  • To report any wild animal that is injured, ill or behaving unusually, please contact the Ministère de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs at 1-877-346-6763 or the Bureau de la protection de la faune de la Montérégie at 450-776-7131.
  • If you witness poaching or suspicious fishing or hunting activity, you can contact SOS poaching at 1-800-463-2191.
  • To report a roadkill or forest kill, call 1-800-463-2191.
  • If you capture a stray cat or dog, please contact the Town of Brome Lake at 450-243-6111.

How many pets can I own if I live in Brome Lake?

Number of pets allowed:

  • A total of five per urban dwelling or house, with a maximum of two dogs and three cats. This five-animal limit does not apply to caged fish or birds.
  • If your dog or cat has a litter, you are allowed to keep the puppies or kittens for a period of three months from their birth. This is an exception to the rule.
  • On farms, kennels (four or more adult dogs) may be permitted under certain strict conditions.

Do I need a licence to own a dog?

A licence is required for all dogs on the territory.

Mandatory: All dogs over three months of age on the territory of Brome Lake must wear their tag with their licence number at all times. Owners must pay a licence fee of $10 per year per animal. Permits are available at Brome Lake Town Hall.

Exceptions: The Town's tag is not mandatory for dogs kept in a kennel, animal hospital, veterinary clinic or establishment run by an animal welfare organization.

What should I do if I lose my pet?

If you lose your pet on the Brome Lake territory, here are a few tips to help you find it:

  • Post signs in places like grocery stores, hardware stores, veterinary clinics and groomers with a photo and description of your pet, where it was lost and, if found, who to contact with a valid phone number.
  • Inform your neighbours and leave a bowl of food and water outside the house.
  • You can also post an ad on Petluck.ca and other local Facebook groups, or on a website for lost pets.
