Avian Influenza: A Case Detected Near Brome Lake

MAPAQ has informed us that a case of H5 avian influenza has been detected in a commercial farm located near our territory.

As the owner of a backyard flock or a small bird farm, you should be aware that the risk of your birds contracting the avian influenza virus is currently high.

Preventive and biosecurity measures must be strictly applied, both on commercial farms and in backyard flocks or small bird farms (e.g., urban hens).

Please review the Advisory Notice, share it, and post it in your coop.

Also post this reminder fact sheet, as a reference for the basic rules to protect your flock against avian influenza.

The requirements set out in the Regulation respecting the sanitary conditions of captive bird housing must be followed at all times.

MAPAQ also recommends that bird owners:

  • Avoid any direct or indirect contact between farmed birds and wild birds by confining birds in a closed building whenever possible, or otherwise in a roofed enclosure (e.g., netting);

  • Prevent the attraction of wild birds by eliminating food sources, water bodies, or standing water near the enclosure;

  • Clean and disinfect all vehicles and equipment before each entry to or exit from the farm;

  • Restrict farm access to authorized persons only and ensure that these individuals comply with current biosecurity measures (keep a visitor log, if possible);

  • Avoid any contact between backyard flocks and commercial farms (e.g., sharing of staff).

In the event of unusual mortalities or signs of illness, consult a veterinarian. If you are unable to reach one, call 450-768-6763 to contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s hotline for reporting sick birds, or 1-844-ANIMAUX to reach MAPAQ’s reporting hotline.
